Chris Pratt Faces Backlash: Fans Accuse Him of Acting in Prayer Video
Chris Pratt is facing backlash after posting a short prayer video that many fans say looked fake.
The 46-year-old actor shared a clip on his official X account on September 14, asking viewers to “just stop real quick and pray” with him. In the video, he recites Psalm 46:10, closing—or squinting—his eyes while appearing to read the words from his phone.

“His eyes not fully closed all the way so he can read the verses is sending me,” one social media user wrote, criticizing Pratt’s performance.
At the end of the clip, Pratt added, “Now you can continue scrolling or you can turn your phone off and go outside. Might I suggest the latter? Go get some sunshine. Go look at a tree, touch some grass. Call a friend. If you’ve got time to be on your phone right now, you’ve got time to do your to-do list and you’ve got time to reach out to somebody in need.”
The prayer video came just days after Pratt shared condolences for the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk, 31, died in a fatal attack while attending a speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10.
Pratt wrote on X, “Praying for Charlie Kirk right now, for his wife and young children, for our country. We need God’s grace. God help us.”
Chris Pratt was raised Lutheran and later worked with Jews for Jesus before identifying as a non-denominational Christian.
He attends Zoe Church in Los Angeles, which faced criticism after actor Elliot Page claimed it was anti-LGBTQ because of a connection to a former Hillsong pastor.
Pratt defended his church, saying, “It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which ‘hates a certain group of people’ and is ‘infamously anti-LGBTQ.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. I go to a church that opens its doors to absolutely everyone.” Brian Houston, the founder of Hillsong, also clarified that Pratt was never a member of Hillsong.
Director James Gunn, who directed Guardians of the Galaxy, publicly defended Pratt, saying he knew the church Pratt attends and criticized those calling for Pratt to be recast as Star-Lord.
In addition to his faith, Pratt has tried to stay neutral politically. In 2017, he said he does not take sides in politics and wants to bring people together. In 2020, he and his wife, Katherine, became Global Ambassadors for the Special Olympics.
In 2024, Pratt wrote an op-ed for Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper about the presidential election, focusing on unity without endorsing either candidate.
Even with his history of charity and neutrality, some fans are still skeptical about Pratt’s prayer video. Social media reactions show that people are watching every move he makes, questioning whether his prayers are genuine or just for show.
