The film, which hit theaters on July 11, has already earned $615 million worldwide. While that’s a strong box office showing, streaming is expected to give the film a new audience. Its message of hope and kindness has connected with viewers, and now it will be easier for fans of the Peacemaker series to catch up on how the movie ties into the show.
Superman is the first film in the new DC Universe and a reboot of the Superman franchise. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The movie follows Superman as he faces the fallout of intervening in an international conflict and works to regain public trust with help from his fellow heroes.
The film was written and directed by James Gunn and produced alongside Peter Safran. It draws inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
The movie premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, and critics praised its colorful and fun tone, along with strong performances from Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult. Some reviewers noted that the story felt a little overstuffed, but overall the reception was positive.
Gunn’s work on Superman follows years of planning after the DC Extended Universe’s Man of Steel sequel stalled. With filming taking place in Norway, Georgia, and Ohio, and wrapping in July 2024, the movie sets the stage for the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. A follow-up film, Man of Tomorrow, is already scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
Streaming on HBO Max gives a wider audience the chance to experience Superman’s story without renting it.
