Netflix Spares No Expense on ‘The Witcher’ Season 4, Budget Hits Record High
Netflix is going all out for the fourth season of The Witcher, despite the show facing challenges and a new lead actor, Liam Hemsworth.
A report from Redanian Intelligence revealed that Season 4 has a staggering budget of $221 million, making it the most expensive season of the series so far.
This is nearly $50 million more than Season 2, which had previously held the record with a $176 million budget.
Breaking it down, each episode of Season 4 reportedly costs around $27 million, a figure only slightly below Netflix’s blockbuster Stranger Things, which spends $30 million per episode. The investment raises questions about Netflix’s strategy, whether the company believes this season will reignite interest in the show or is simply betting big to regain the series’ original popularity.
Season 4 of The Witcher is set to premiere on October 30, with Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role of Geralt of Rivia. The show has already been renewed for a fifth and final season, announced in April 2024.

Looking back, Season 3 had mixed results. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 79% approval rating based on 47 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10. The site noted, “Capably shouldered by Henry Cavill’s gruff charm, The Witcher’s plotty third season pays a fittingly fond farewell to this particular Geralt of Rivia.”
Metacritic gave the season a score of 71 out of 100 for the first five episodes and 65 out of 100 for the last three, indicating generally favorable reviews. Despite this, the show saw a 30% drop in viewership compared to Season 2.
It’s clear that Netflix is betting big on The Witcher, hoping that the huge budget for Season 4 will pay off in renewed audience interest. The investment shows the streaming giant is committed to keeping the series competitive and visually impressive.
This move is bold. Spending such a large amount on a series with declining viewership is risky, but it could also pay off if the new season captivates fans.
