Kirsten Dunst Teases Interest in Spider-Man 4 With Tobey Maguire — But This Time, With a Different Twist
Kirsten Dunst has revealed she’s open to returning as Mary Jane Watson if Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire ever happens, but with a new twist.
During a recent appearance on The Supes Show, Dunst was asked whether she’d consider reprising her role from Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.
The actress didn’t hesitate to say she would love to come back, especially if the movie explored Peter Parker and MJ as parents. “That would be cool, right? I mean, I don’t know if the fans are into it. I feel like that is an interesting movie, right? Me and Tobey doing that again… with kids,” she said.
Dunst starred alongside Maguire in three Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi between 2002 and 2007. Although Spider-Man 4 was once in development with Raimi, Maguire, and Dunst all expected to return, the project was eventually scrapped before filming began.
The studio later rebooted the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012.
The idea of reviving Raimi’s Spider-Man universe has gained traction again after Tobey Maguire’s surprise return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie left his version of Peter Parker’s story open-ended, and fans have been wondering what happened to him and MJ since then.
Adding to the buzz, writer Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman with Matt Reeves — recently shared online that he wants to pitch a script for Spider-Man 4. Tomlin said he’s been trying to reach Sam Raimi about his idea, explaining, “Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films.”
While Sony and Marvel are currently focused on Tom Holland’s next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, many longtime fans of Raimi’s trilogy still hope to see a continuation of Maguire’s story.
With Dunst expressing interest and new creative voices like Tomlin eager to contribute, the possibility of a nostalgic yet fresh Spider-Man 4 feels more realistic than it has in years.
