Andrew Garfield Responds to Rumors About Returning as Spider-Man in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars has fans buzzing with speculation about who will appear, including the possibility of Andrew Garfield returning as Spider-Man.
The movie was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, with Jack Shafer Waldron initially writing the script. In July 2024, the Russo brothers were confirmed as directors and producers alongside Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who are taking over writing duties, and Robert Downey Jr. was announced to play Doctor Doom. Filming is scheduled to start in mid-2026 at Pinewood Studios in England and is expected to take around six months. The movie is set for release on December 17, 2027.
The main cast of the Fantastic Four will also be returning from their previous film, Doomsday. Beyond that, details about the story are scarce. However, rumors have been circulating that Andrew Garfield could reprise his role as Spider-Man.
When MTV asked Garfield about the speculation, he gave a teasing response, saying, “You’ll find out! Whatever response I’m having, is it exasperation? Is it? I don’t know. You’ll find out.”

Garfield previously played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). While his films weren’t huge hits, his performance was well received, and fans were thrilled to see him join Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Garfield, however, had to directly lie to keep his involvement hidden, and since then, fans don’t believe a thing that comes out of his mouth regarding his involvement with the MCU.
Amazingly, Garfield admitted that during the promotion of No Way Home, he had kept his involvement a secret for two years.
He said, “I lied to people for a good two years. I lied to the internet for two years and it felt great. It was fun to keep it secret. You know when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone and they’re like ‘I hate surprises, is the party happening.’ […] It felt like organizing a surprise party for a bunch of people.”
While nothing has been confirmed yet, fans are eager to see if Garfield will swing back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Secret Wars. With the Russo brothers at the helm and the core Fantastic Four cast returning, the film is shaping up to be one of the biggest Marvel events yet.
