Jeremy Renner once revealed his personal favorite film in a career full of hits. Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor faced a playful challenge: to choose the best movie from a selection of his most popular works, including Arrival, The Hurt Locker, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

The final decision came down to a showdown between Wind River (2017) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Renner chose the Marvel blockbuster, saying, “I have to go with Endgame, because of how culturally significant that is. It required so many people and so many films – 22 films to make that 23rd film. The outcome of that, you know. To be able to weep and laugh, and… I mean we all know what that movie is, right? It’s insane.”

Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serves as the conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the movie brings together an enormous ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Renner himself.

The story follows the remaining Avengers and their allies as they attempt to reverse the devastation caused by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

The film was a major event in cinema, with a production budget estimated between $356 million and $400 million.

Critics largely praised it for balancing action with emotion, giving long-time fans a satisfying conclusion to over a decade of interconnected stories. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 94% approval rating, and Metacritic assigned it a score of 78 out of 100. Audiences responded enthusiastically, giving it an A+ on CinemaScore.

Critics highlighted the film’s blend of spectacle and character development. NPR’s Glen Weldon noted that the movie acts as a victory lap for the MCU, rewarding loyal fans. Richard Roeper praised the performances and the emotional impact, calling it “universally stellar.” Some reviewers, however, were less impressed with the directors’ visual choices or found the runtime overwhelming.

For Renner, Endgame stands out not just for its scale but for its significance in pop culture. It brought together 22 prior films, offered an emotional finale to many characters’ journeys, and gave audiences moments of both laughter and tears.

Renner’s choice makes perfect sense. While smaller, personal films showcase his acting range, Endgame represents a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic moment that redefined blockbuster filmmaking. It’s a cultural milestone that few actors ever get to be part of.

What do you think? Do you agree with Renner’s choice, or do you have a different favorite from his filmography? Share your thoughts in the comments.
