The first clip from Avatar: Fire and Ash has been released, giving fans an early look at the next chapter in James Cameron’s sci-fi epic. The film is the third in the Avatar series and follows Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

The story continues a year after Jake and Neytiri have settled with the Metkayina clan. Their family is dealing with grief after Neteyam’s death. They soon face a new and aggressive Na’vi tribe called the Ash people, led by the fiery Varang. Varang has joined forces with Jake’s old enemy, Quaritch, which escalates the conflict on Pandora.

Cameron returns as director and co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The story was developed by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. Lightstorm Entertainment is producing the film, while 20th Century Studios will distribute it. Fans will see returning actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprising their roles.

James Cameron first spoke about making Avatar sequels back in 2006. The first two sequels were announced in 2010 after the original film’s success. Production has faced multiple delays over the years, partly because of the new technology needed for underwater motion capture. Filming for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and wrapped in December 2020 after over three years of work.

The release of Avatar: Fire and Ash has been postponed nine times, with the latest update coming in June 2023. The film is now set to hit theaters in the United States on December 19. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in production, with planned releases in 2029 and 2031.
