Netflix has confirmed that Lena Dunham’s romantic comedy series Too Much will not return for a second season. Speaking at an FYC panel last week, Dunham explained that the show was always intended as a limited series.

Co-created by Dunham and her husband Luis Felber, Too Much drew inspiration from their own love story. The 10-episode series, which premiered on July 10, starred Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe as Jessica and Felix, navigating a transatlantic romance filled with cultural differences, past relationships, and family dynamics.

Dunham shared at the panel, “Our intention was always to make Too Much as a limited series. It was meant to feel like a classic transatlantic love story but with time to really dig into the complexities that a film doesn’t have the space for.”

While Dunham admitted she enjoyed exploring the characters and imagined what might happen in a second season—“Felix and Jess have a baby! Felix and Jess are on the first ship to populate Mars!”—she said the story was complete. She added, “We had done what we needed to do, and part of the job is knowing when to park it.”

Despite the series ending after one season, Dunham hinted she might revisit Jessica and Felix in the future: “Who knows — maybe there will be a time down the line when it feels right to check in on them again. But right now I’m pulling a Mary Poppins and heading on to the next (imaginary) family that needs me.”

Critics responded positively to the show. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 83% approval rating, praising Megan Stalter’s performance and Dunham’s humor. Metacritic gave the series a score of 68 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.

In Too Much, Jessica, a New York commercial producer recovering from a painful breakup, relocates to London for work. Alone in a council flat, she meets musician Felix at a pub, sparking a slow-burn romance. Together, they navigate love, family, and cultural differences, creating a charming and modern take on cross-continental relationships.
