Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 made a strong debut at the box office, earning $109.1 million worldwide during its first weekend.

The film exceeded pre-weekend projections, with international markets contributing $46.1 million from 76 territories. The movie’s budget is estimated between $36 million and $51 million.

The horror sequel is based on the popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon and follows the events of the 2023 film adaptation.

Directed by Emma Tammi and written by Cawthon, the film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Theodus Crane, and Matthew Lillard, who all return from the previous movie. New cast members include Freddy Carter, Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, and Teo Briones.

Set a year after the first film, the story focuses on Abby Schmidt, played by Piper Rubio, as she reconnects with her animatronic friends. Her actions lead to events that reveal the origins of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Cawthon had mentioned back in 2018 that a second film would be possible if the first one was successful, taking inspiration from the second video game in the series.

Despite its strong opening, critics were not impressed with the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, only 12 percent of 81 reviews were positive.

The site’s consensus reads, “A step down from an already clunky original, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 goes through the motions with all the grace of a malfunctioning animatronic.” Metacritic gave the film a score of 26 out of 100 based on 23 critics, indicating “generally unfavorable” reviews. CinemaScore audiences gave the film an average grade of “B,” which is lower than the first film’s “A−.”
