The upcoming psychological thriller, The Housemaid, is making waves ahead of its release on December 19. Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, the film adapts Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name.

It stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a young woman with a troubled past who becomes a live-in housemaid for a wealthy family, and Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, the woman who hires her.

The story follows Millie as she settles into the Winchester household, only to uncover dark secrets hidden beneath their seemingly perfect life. The ensemble cast also includes Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, Michele Morrone as the groundskeeper Enzo, and Elizabeth Perkins as Andrew’s mother Evelyn, along with Indiana Elle, Mark Grossman, Hannah Cruz, Megan Ferguson, and Ellen Tamaki in supporting roles.

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 75% Tomatometer score based on 36 reviews.

Critics have praised Seyfried’s performance as a highlight of the film, noting that scenes featuring her bring a strong dramatic tension to the story.

According to reviewers, the film mixes romance, intrigue, and suspense, weaving a tale of secrets, lies, and manipulation. Some critics mentioned that while the film keeps audiences engaged, moments without Seyfried lose some of their impact.

What remains of The Housemaid is a film that, despite a handful of unintended laughs, is so desperate for attention that it forgets why it exists in the first place.
