WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has officially cut ties with the company, citing President Donald Trump’s recent comments about the late filmmaker Rob Reiner as the breaking point.

Foley, known for his pivotal role in WWE’s “Attitude Era” and his 1999 WWE Championship win over The Rock, returned to WWE in later years as a commissioner and commentator.

Foley shared on Instagram that he had been uneasy about WWE’s close relationship with Trump for months, but the president’s remarks on Reiner’s death were the “final straw.” Trump, who has a long-standing connection with WWE that includes on-screen appearances in the mid-2000s and his 2013 Hall of Fame induction, has maintained close ties with the McMahon family, including Linda McMahon, currently serving as Secretary of Education. This connection has repeatedly placed WWE in political debates.

Despite the controversies surrounding Trump, WWE has generally embraced his presence, with appearances at matches and support from several top stars.

However, Trump’s comments about Reiner sparked backlash across political lines, with critics questioning the appropriateness of companies maintaining ties with him. On Monday, Trump claimed that Reiner’s death resulted from a “raging obsession” with him and described Reiner as a “deranged person.”

In his Instagram post, Foley made clear he no longer wants to be associated with a company that “coddles a man so seemingly void of compassion as he marches our country towards autocracy.”

He confirmed he will stop making appearances for WWE while Trump is president and said he will not renew his Legends contract when it expires in June. Foley added, “I love WWE, will always treasure my time with them, and I am deeply appreciative for all the opportunities they afforded me. But, in the words of Popeye the sailor, ‘I stands all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.’”

Foley also publicly supported musician Jack White, who condemned Trump’s remarks as “disgusting” and “indefensible,” calling it a “corrupt and narcissistic sin” to use someone’s death to boost personal vanity or political agenda. Foley shared in his Instagram story, “How any of my WWE colleagues can stand by, let alone stand next to this man is beyond me.”

This move marks one of the most high-profile splits between a wrestling legend and WWE over political controversy in recent years. Foley’s departure underscores the challenges WWE faces in navigating its historical ties to Trump while addressing criticism from its talent and the public.
