Lily Allen has opened up about her struggle with shopping and spending, revealing that she is currently in therapy to manage it. The English singer discussed her addiction in a new episode of her podcast, “Miss Me?” which was released on Monday, December 22.

During the episode, Allen explained how therapy has been helping her deal with her spending habits. “I actually did EMDR therapy yesterday on my spending,” she said. “And how it’s related to my sense of self-worth and we tried to separate the two. So let’s see how that goes.”

She also shared a deeper reason behind her behavior. “I think I try and get rid of it (money) because I don’t think I deserve it,” Allen told listeners.

Allen described the type of therapy she is using, called EMDR, to her co-host Miquita Oliver. “EMDR therapy is a special type of therapy,” she said. “There’s like, what do you call it? Like stimuli that stimulate the left side and the right side of your brain. And basically try and create new pathways in relation to certain behaviours or traumatic experiences or traumatic interactions with certain human beings or anything really.”

The singer revealed that she began EMDR therapy around four to five months ago and has found it extremely helpful. “It’s like been life changing. I just absolutely love it,” she said. Allen also made it clear that she is sharing her experience, not giving medical advice. “I am not a doctor and I am not qualified to give that kind of advice. But this is what is working for me currently,” she added.

Allen’s candid discussion highlights the struggles some people face with spending and the ways therapy can help address underlying issues.
