Netflix Faces Outrage & Calls for Boycott Over Will Byers’ Emotional Scene in ‘Stranger Things’: Fans Say “Netflix Ruined Will”
Fans of Stranger Things are reacting strongly to the latest episodes of Season 5 Volume 2, particularly Chapter Seven: The Bridge, directed by Shawn Levy.
The final batch of episodes, released on December 25, included Chapter Five: Shock Jock, Chapter Six: Escape From Camazotz, and Chapter Seven: The Bridge. It was in the last of these episodes that Will Byers came out to his friends in a heartfelt moment that fans had been anticipating for several seasons.
In the scene, Will explained that he had hidden part of himself because he didn’t want to be treated differently. He told his friends that while he shares their hobbies, memories, and bonds, there was one truth he had avoided revealing.
Will admitted he doesn’t like girls the way his friends do and that he had once had a crush on someone who could not reciprocate his feelings. Ultimately, he realized that his struggle was more about accepting himself than any particular person. “I haven’t told any of you this because I didn’t want you to see me as different. But the truth is, I am. I am different,” Will said in the episode.
The moment sparked a wave of backlash from viewers online. Some fans criticized Netflix for focusing the final season on Will’s sexuality. “DID YOU KNOW🚨: Netflix decided to RUIN their most popular show of all-time, Stranger Things, by focusing their final season on Will coming out as a homosexual, promoting the propaganda that Will’s superpowers are because he’s ‘embraced his s******,’” one fan wrote.
Others said, “The woke mind virus has infected everything. Come on Netflix, you can do better.”
Some criticism came from the queer community as well. In his speech, Will described a vision from Vecna showing a possible future where his friends reacted with concern instead of rejection, which made him isolate himself.
While the scene was intended to be empowering, it also reignited debate over “Byler,” the long-running fan theory about a romantic future between Will and Mike. In the episode, Mike is revealed as the person Will once had feelings for.
Fans took to social media to voice frustration with the execution of the scene. One wrote, “After all these years we get a poorly executed five-minute scene that pulls everything together?” Another said, “That coming out scene was a spit in the face of all queer fans.” Some also questioned how Will’s feelings were portrayed in relation to Mike, with one fan commenting, “So Mike could swap spit with some girl that he can’t even tell he loves her? How is that fair after everything Will has been through?”
Not all viewers were disappointed. A few argued that the scene was an important step for Will’s personal journey and that the door may not be fully closed on his story. However, many fans feel that Chapter Seven solidified the romantic conclusion for Will, even as it allowed him to embrace his identity.
The debate over Will Byers’ coming out scene highlights the challenges of balancing character development and audience expectations in long-running shows. It also shows how passionate fans are about the direction of their favorite series.
