Sydney Sweeney’s Hit Thriller Is Already Getting a Sequel
Sydney Sweeney’s hit thriller “The Housemaid” is already getting a sequel thanks to its massive box office success. Lionsgate announced that the follow-up, titled “The Housemaid’s Secret,” is officially in development and is expected to start production later this year.
The original film, directed by Paul Feig, has earned $133 million worldwide in just over two weeks, far surpassing its $35 million budget. The story follows Millie, played by Sydney Sweeney, a young woman trying to escape her past who becomes a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester.
The couple hides dangerous secrets, while Enzo, their groundskeeper played by Michele Morrone, becomes an important ally to Millie. The film also stars Amanda Seyfried and Elizabeth Perkins. Taylor Swift’s song “I Did Something Bad” plays during the end credits, teasing Millie’s next steps.
Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair, commented on the sequel, saying, “It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next.” He added that the studio is excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to the screen.
The sequel will be adapted from the second book in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy by screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine. Sweeney and McFadden will also return as executive producers, along with Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young.
Paul Feig expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with ‘The Housemaid’ and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.”
Michele Morrone and Sweeney are expected to return, with Seyfried hinting at a cameo in the sequel. She told Variety, “No one’s said anything about No. 2, but I guarantee there will be No. 2. And I almost guarantee that I’m gonna be some small cameo in it, because it’s about Syd and her working for a new family.”

The first “Housemaid” book has sold over 12 million copies and has been translated into 40 languages. The sequel book alone sold four million copies and continues the story of Millie’s dangerous adventures. Lionsgate executives and producers expressed pride in the project and excitement about bringing the thrilling story to a larger audience.
With its strong box office, fan interest, and bestselling source material, “The Housemaid’s Secret” is shaping up to be another major hit for Lionsgate.
