Netflix’s hit anthology series “Black Mirror” is set to return for an eighth season. The show’s creator, Charlie Brooker, confirmed the news in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum on Friday.

“’Black Mirror’ will return, and hopefully it’ll be more ‘Black Mirror’ than ever,” Brooker said. “Luckily it does have a future, so I can confirm that ‘Black Mirror’ will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting.”

The announcement comes as the series earns its first Golden Globe nominations. Season 7 received nods for best limited series or anthology, and actors Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti were recognized for their performances in the episodes “Common People” and “Eulogy.”

Brooker described his approach to writing the new season as similar to creating a music album. “I’ll often think of, ‘Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? … Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?’” he said. “Very unlikely you’ll ever see a ‘Black Mirror’ hoedown.”

Season 7, which premiered in April 2025, was praised for returning to the show’s dark, tech-focused themes after some mixed reviews for Season 6. The sequel to “USS Callister,” titled “Into Infinity,” was highlighted by critics for expanding the original story in interesting ways.

“Black Mirror” is a British anthology series that often explores near-future worlds affected by new technology. The episodes are written mainly by Brooker with executive producer Annabel Jones. The series first aired on Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, including the 2014 special “White Christmas.” Netflix later picked up the show, producing additional seasons in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023, and 2025. It also has an interactive film, Bandersnatch, and two webisode series. A companion book, Inside Black Mirror, was released in 2018.

The series has won several awards, including three consecutive Primetime Emmys for San Junipero, USS Callister, and Bandersnatch. Critics credit the show with helping revive the anthology format on television, though some have noted that its moral themes can feel predictable at times.

“Black Mirror” has gained a reputation for predicting real-world technology trends, making it one of the most talked-about series of the 2010s and beyond.
