George R.R. Martin is opening up about one of his most ambitious post-Game of Thrones projects, a spinoff called Aegon’s Conquest. The story will explore King Aegon Targaryen’s rise and his conquest of Westeros, a tale that predates the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. Martin says the series is being developed in two formats: as a potential HBO drama series and as a massive feature film comparable in scale to Dune.

Martin has been careful with post-Thrones projects. He has resisted creating direct sequels to the original story because his books’ ending will differ from the show. “[The book’s ending is] going to be significantly different. Some characters who are alive in my book are going to be dead in the show, and vice versa,” he explained. This caution has guided his decisions for new projects, ensuring they remain true to his vision of Westeros.

In addition to Aegon’s Conquest, Martin has been involved in other Thrones-related ideas. One project featuring the seafaring character, the Sea Snake, has shifted from live-action to animation to control production costs. He also continues to work with writers on future stories that haven’t been officially announced.

Martin’s approach shows his commitment to quality over speed. He wants to maintain the integrity of his world while exploring new stories that expand Westeros without relying on the television series’ canon.

Aegon’s Conquest sounds like a thrilling way to dive deeper into Westeros history. Exploring Targaryen history in both a series and a film format gives fans plenty to look forward to. I’m curious to see how Martin balances the story’s epic scope with the characters’ personal journeys.

What do you think about Martin’s plan for Aegon’s Conquest? Are you excited to see Westeros’ past brought to life? Share your thoughts in the comments.
