The legal battle surrounding the film adaptation of It Ends With Us has intensified following the release of unsealed court documents on Tuesday. These records detail a production environment rife with allegations of boundary-crossing behavior and harassment against director and star Justin Baldoni.

The documents include testimony from lead actress Blake Lively, as well as supporting cast members Jenny Slate and Isabela Ferrer, who all cited discomfort with Baldoni’s conduct on set.

Jenny Slate, who portrayed Lively’s best friend Allysa in the film, provided significant testimony regarding Baldoni’s comments on physical appearance. Slate testified that Baldoni frequently called Lively “hot” and “s***” during production. She noted that she flagged these comments as inappropriate at the time, an intervention she claims Baldoni did not appreciate.

The situation reportedly extended to Slate herself. On another occasion, Baldoni told Slate that she looked “s***” in what she was wearing, which violated her sense of professional norms. “I assumed there was an understanding of — ‘We’re not doing this anymore,’” Slate testified regarding the incident.

She elaborated on her stance, emphasizing that such language has no place in a modern professional environment. “It’s not appropriate anymore. It never was appropriate, but it’s not appropriate in a workplace,” she added. The unsealed evidence also included text messages Slate sent to others, in which she expressed deep disdain for the director.

In these messages, Slate referred to Baldoni as a “narcissist” and a “fraud,” specifically attacking the sensitive persona he cultivates in the media. “Justin is truly a false ally and I’m unwilling to do anything that promotes the image that he’s crafting as a ‘male feminist’,” she wrote. Her criticism was scathing, adding, “I honestly have never ever encountered anything like this dude. He’s the biggest clown and the most intense narcissist.”

Blake Lively’s testimony detailed further instances where she felt exposed and humiliated. She described an interaction where Baldoni complimented her outfit with a specific inflection that she interpreted as a leer. “It wasn’t the moment he saw the outfit,” Lively said. “It wasn’t until I bent down and the coat opened that I got the compliment on my outfit… I felt uncomfortable. I felt exposed.”

Lively also cited issues with the filming of a birth scene, where she was placed in stirrups for several hours while nearly nude. She revealed that she only learned that day that the actor playing the doctor was a personal friend of Baldoni. “I was extremely uncomfortable with the degree to which I was exposed during the Birth Scene, which felt violative and humiliating,” she stated.

Blake Lively continues to be a major force in Hollywood, having first gained global fame as Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl. She has since built a diverse filmography with hits like The Shallows and The Age of Adaline. Recently, she has been filming A Simple Favor 2, the sequel to her 2018 thriller with Anna Kendrick.

Justin Baldoni rose to prominence playing Rafael Solano on the satirical telenovela Jane the Virgin. He transitioned to directing with the terminal illness drama Five Feet Apart and the Disney+ film Clouds. He is also known for his podcast and book Man Enough, which explores traditional masculinity, a brand that is now under scrutiny given the allegations.

Jenny Slate is a comedian and actress known for her voice work in Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and her tenure on Saturday Night Live. She has balanced indie projects with mainstream success, appearing in Venom and The Secret Life of Pets. Her role in It Ends With Us was a significant supporting part, playing the sister of Baldoni’s character.

It Ends With Us is based on the 2016 romance novel by Colleen Hoover, which became a cultural phenomenon on TikTok years after its release. The story follows Lily Bloom as she navigates a toxic relationship with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid while reconnecting with her first love, Atlas Corrigan. Despite the controversy, the film was a financial success, grossing over $300 million globally.
