Lionsgate To Create Epic TV Series on Legendary Soccer Club’s Shocking Rise to Glory
Manchester United is taking its story from the pitch to the screen. The legendary football club has teamed up with Lionsgate to develop a scripted TV drama based on its history. According to sources familiar with the deal who spoke anonymously to the media, the project is still in its early stages, but an agreement is in place. United is reportedly guaranteed a low multi-million-pound payment just for signing on, with the potential to share profits and royalties if the show succeeds.
The series is being compared to Netflix’s The Crown, but instead of royalty, it will focus on the Red Devils. Lionsgate, known for hits like The Hunger Games and John Wick, is spearheading the production. British writer Jed Mercurio, famous for creating Line of Duty and Bodyguard, is involved in talks and is also a fan of Manchester United.
The show could cover some of the most dramatic moments in the club’s history. This might include the tragic Munich Air Disaster of 1958, where 23 people died, including eight players, and how manager Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team to win the European Cup a decade later.
The drama would also likely explore the legendary tenure of Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles, along with storylines about famous players like George Best, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The owners, including the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, could also be featured.
This scripted drama comes after Manchester United decided to pass on other projects. In July, The Athletic reported that United declined Amazon Prime’s offer of more than 10 million pounds for a behind-the-scenes documentary series called All or Nothing. Sources said the club’s coach, Ruben Amorim, didn’t want cameras following players during training or matches, seeing it as a distraction. United had also explored a Disney+ documentary focusing on Sir Alex Ferguson, but that project never moved forward either.
Now, the club is putting its energy into a scripted series with Lionsgate. Both Manchester United and the studio declined to comment on the reports, but fans are already buzzing about the potential to see their heroes’ stories brought to life on screen.
This could be a new way for football fans to experience the drama, glory, and heartbreak of one of the world’s most famous clubs.
