This Actor Will Play the All-Powerful, Dangerous Odin in Prime Video’s ‘God of War’
Prime Video has officially cast Mandy Patinkin as Odin in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the hit video game God of War.
The actor, known for his roles in The Princess Bride and Homeland, will take on the role of the All-Father, a character described as “not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. He is the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous, he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days.”
In addition to Patinkin, Prime Video announced that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, the Icelandic-American actor from The Deep, will play Thor in the series.

The show has already been ordered for two seasons and is being led by acclaimed genre showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Preproduction is currently taking place in Vancouver. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, who worked on Shōgun and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes.
Other confirmed cast members include Ryan Hurst as Kratos, the series’ central character, and Max Parker as Heimdall. Additional casting details have not yet been revealed. With the success of Amazon’s Fallout, which is currently airing its second season, the streaming platform hopes God of War will become another major hit based on a beloved video game franchise.
The series follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel together to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus challenges his father to grow as a human. The show is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in collaboration with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
The addition of Mandy Patinkin as Odin is a major casting moment for the series, bringing a veteran actor with strong dramatic and comedic range to the role of one of Norse mythology’s most complex figures. Fans are eagerly awaiting how the series will balance the mythological elements with the father-son story at the heart of the game.
Casting Patinkin as Odin feels like a smart choice. He has the experience to make a layered, intimidating, but also human portrayal of such a legendary character. Adding Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor also promises strong chemistry in the Norse pantheon. I’m excited to see how Prime Video brings this video game world to life on screen.
