HBO Confirms Release Window for ‘Harry Potter’ Series
HBO is getting closer to revealing when fans can finally watch the Harry Potter TV series. The new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books has been in the works for years, and now the network is starting to narrow down a premiere date.
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, told Deadline on January 30, 2026, “We’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027.”
He previously mentioned in 2024 that the series could arrive in late 2026 or 2027, but at that time, the scripts were still in the early stages.
The show is being filmed at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, UK. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout is cast as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger. The adult cast includes Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. Nick Frost joins as Rubeus Hagrid, and Warwick Davis returns as Professor Filius Flitwick.
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, is writing and executive producing the series. Mark Mylod, director of The Menu, is directing several episodes. J.K. Rowling, David Heyman, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts are also executive producers, with Hans Zimmer recently signed to compose the music. “The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team,” Zimmer said.
The young cast was selected from more than 32,000 children across the UK and Ireland. McLaughlin recently made his stage debut in Macbeth, Stanton is a West End veteran, and Stout will make his professional screen debut. The first season will have eight episodes, and HBO has already hinted at a second season.
The series is generating excitement for both its new take on the story and Hans Zimmer’s involvement. Fans are especially curious to see how the familiar Wizarding World music will be updated for the small screen.
The early 2027 release window is a smart move. It gives the show time to fully develop the story and lets fans anticipate a polished, high-quality adaptation.
