Christian Bale is no stranger to the grueling demands of Method acting, but his latest role as Frankenstein’s monster brought a whole new meaning to the term “tortured artist.”

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-winning actor revealed the mental toll of sitting for six hours every single day to transform into “Frank” for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film, The Bride!. To cope with the physical restraint and the mounting “despair” of the makeup chair, Bale developed a primal morning ritual that eventually took over the entire set.

I would scream like crazy, every day. Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long, Bale said, explaining how he kept himself from going insane during the grueling process.

While Bale stars as the iconic monster, Jessie Buckley plays the title role of the Bride, undergoing a comparatively breezy ninety-minute transformation. Bale admitted that his need to shout was so intense he had to carefully plan when to let it out to avoid a public misunderstanding.

I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash. And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts, he confessed. What started as a private coping mechanism soon became a daily event for the production staff.

Oh man, I’m telling you, the whole crew got involved by the end because people would hear us screaming. We would open the doors, and gradually, a bit like the Bride’s revolution, a few people were going, ‘Can we do it too?’ And then by the end, there were like 30 people who would hear us and run to the makeup trailer to be a part of it and scream as well, Bale recalled.

This level of commitment is par for the course for Bale, who has a storied history of punishing his body for his craft. He famously went on an all-protein diet to bulk up for American Psycho before dropping 60 pounds to reach a skeletal 120 pounds for The Machinist. His diet for that film was famously restricted to water, an apple, and one cup of coffee per day. Shortly after, he gained 100 pounds of muscle in just six months to play the Caped Crusader in Batman Begins.

The Bride! serves as a reunion for Bale and director Maggie Gyllenhaal, who starred together in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Set in 1930s Chicago, the film is a punk-rock reimagining where the monster and his Bride go on a cross-country crime spree. The star-studded ensemble includes Peter Sarsgaard as a detective, Penélope Cruz as Myrna, Annette Bening as Dr. Euphronius, and even the director’s brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, as the glamorous Ronnie Reed.

As for what is next for Bale in 2026, he is reportedly “circling” a major role in Michael Mann’s highly anticipated sequel Heat 2, potentially joining a cast that includes Adam Driver and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The actor is also attached to play the titular role in Madden, a biopic about the legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden, which is currently in production. Between his role as an undead monster and his upcoming turn as a football icon, Bale’s 2026 slate proves he has no intention of slowing down his transformative career.
