Back in 2016, Will Ferrell faced heavy backlash over a movie role that never made it to the screen. According to reports from the time, Ferrell had agreed to star in a comedy called Reagan, written by Mike Rosolio. The script had some industry support and was even featured on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. A live reading had also been held with Josh Brolin. But when the story’s plot became public, the reaction was swift and intense.

The film was set during Ronald Reagan’s second term and centered on a White House intern. The intern’s unusual job was to convince Reagan, who was struggling with Alzheimer’s, that he was just acting in a movie rather than serving as president. While the idea was meant to be comedic, many people were outraged that a serious illness was being used as the premise for humor.

Reagan’s own family spoke out quickly. Michael Reagan posted on social media, saying the filmmakers “should be ashamed” for green-lighting the project. Patti Davis, Reagan’s daughter, also addressed Ferrell directly in an open letter, writing, “Perhaps you would like to explain to them how this disease is suitable material for a comedy.”

The criticism didn’t stop there. The Alzheimer’s Association released a statement condemning the film, asking, “Would filmmakers consider using a fatal form of cancer or another deadly disease for comedy? It’s time to stop this forever.”

The backlash was immediate. Ferrell had only been attached to the project for two days. On April 27, 2016, news broke that he would star and produce the movie. By April 29, his team confirmed he was stepping away. They explained that “while it is by no means an ‘Alzheimer’s comedy’ as has been suggested, Mr Ferrell is not pursuing this project.” They also noted that the script was just one of many he had been considering.

Since then, Ferrell has avoided projects that could spark controversy. He recently appeared in the hit Barbie movie as the CEO of Mattel.

The controversy around Reagan raises a larger question about comedy in Hollywood. Some topics, like serious illnesses, clearly hit a nerve. Do you think there are lines that comedians and filmmakers should never cross? Share your thoughts in the comments.
