Charlie’s Angels Make a Comeback as a New Movie Begins Development
Sony is once again looking to the heavens as a new iteration of Charlie’s Angels enters the early stages of development. While official confirmation from the studio remains elusive, industry whispers suggest a familiar face is returning to the fold.
Reports indicate that Drew Barrymore and her production company, Flower Films, are involved in this latest attempt to revive the iconic brand. This would mark a significant homecoming, as her banner was the creative force behind the high-octane films that dominated the early 2000s.
Sony has declined to provide any official statement regarding the project at this time. The property originally began as a television phenomenon on ABC, running for five seasons starting in 1976.
That original series transformed Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith into household names. It also solidified Aaron Spelling’s reputation as a powerhouse producer in the television industry.
The show established a beloved premise involving talented female private investigators working for the Townsend Agency. Their missions were directed by the mysterious and hidden Charlie Townsend, with a man named Bosley acting as the middleman.
The franchise reached a new peak in 2000 when Sony’s Columbia Pictures released a feature film directed by McG. This version starred Barrymore alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, becoming a global box office sensation.
The film earned $264.1 million during its original run, which would equal roughly $493 million in today’s economy. A high-energy sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, followed in 2003 to continue the momentum.
Efforts to keep the franchise alive in the following years met with varying degrees of success. A 2011 television reboot was grounded quickly, lasting only seven episodes before being pulled from the air.
In 2019, Elizabeth Banks directed a new cinematic take starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. This version expanded the Townsend Agency into a massive international intelligence network with various teams across the globe.
Unfortunately, the 2019 film failed to connect with audiences and struggled significantly at the box office. This new project represents a fresh start for the series as it moves through its initial planning phase.
The script is being handled by Pete Chiarelli, a producer who transitioned into a successful screenwriting career. He first gained major attention with the hit Disney comedy The Proposal.
Chiarelli’s recent portfolio includes the magical thriller Now You See Me 2 and the massive cultural hit Crazy Rich Asians. He also contributed to the story for GOAT, a new animated feature from Sony Pictures Animation.
That film, produced by basketball superstar Stephen Curry, actually makes its theatrical debut today. While details on the cast for this new Angels movie are still under wraps, the creative team is starting to take shape.
Aside from her production duties, Drew Barrymore continues to host her successful daily talk show as she prepares to celebrate her 51st birthday. She also has a new project titled Influenced on the horizon, featuring a star-studded cast including Gwyneth Paltrow.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Banks is currently promoting her upcoming Peacock series, The Miniature Wife, which is set to premiere this April. Kristen Stewart has also stayed busy, recently making waves with her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.
