Why Emma Stone Still Refuses to Watch One of Her Own Movies 16 Years Later
Emma Stone may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but she still feels nervous about one movie from her early career. During an interview with Variety, the actress admitted that she has never watched the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, even though it became a fan favorite.
The film paired her with Ryan Gosling and featured a huge cast that included Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Marisa Tomei. Even though the movie was a success, Stone said the filming period was stressful because she put too much pressure on herself.
She explained in the interview, I was really in love with that script, but I put so much pressure on myself. I was 20, and while we were shooting it, I was just going nuts and was like, this whole thing could fail. The script was written by Dan Fogelman, and Stone felt the responsibility of being part of such a strong cast.
The actress also talked about how the project felt different from Easy A, which she led before this movie. She said, It felt like it had to be well-calibrated throughout, and it was the first time that I ever had to rely on myself to be able to carry all of that. Because of that pressure, she never watched the final film. When Timothée Chalamet asked if she had seen it, she replied, I haven’t seen it.
Stone admitted that her relationship with watching her own work has changed over time. She even asked Chalamet, Can you watch your stuff? which shows she is now more open to seeing her performances.
Since those early years, her career has grown massively. She won her second Oscar for Poor Things and continues to work closely with director Yorgos Lanthimos. She recently appeared in Kinds of Kindness with Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe, and she also received praise for the TV series The Curse.
Her newest project is Bugonia, and she is also working behind the scenes through her company Fruit Tree. Even though she still skips that rom-com, her career continues to move forward.
