When you choose a career in acting, your personal tastes and fears don’t always stay at the door. Some of the most famous figures in horror, like Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell, have admitted they actually can’t stand watching the very genre that made them icons.

It seems that for these performers, the ability to portray terror on screen is entirely separate from their willingness to experience it as an audience member. Emily Blunt is another high-profile actor who shares this particular paradox. Despite her acclaimed work in the A Quiet Place franchise, the English star has been vocal about her genuine dislike for scary movies.

While she hasn’t limited herself to one style—navigating everything from the fashion-fueled comedy of The Devil Wears Prada to the high-stakes science fiction of Edge of Tomorrow—her ventures into the macabre remain a curious choice for someone who claims to be a “wuss.”

Her decision to lead the cast of A Quiet Place was undoubtedly influenced by the fact that her husband, John Krasinski, co-wrote and directed the film. However, her very first foray into the genre was much more personal.

In 2007, she starred in the supernatural thriller Wind Chill, a role she took on primarily to impress her teenage brother. She recalled that her sibling had loathed her previous projects and thought it was awesome that she was finally doing something with a bit of a bite.

Blunt viewed the role as a creative stretch, eager to see if she could realistically convey absolute disabling fear without letting her own personal anxieties get in the way. She admitted that while she loves a professional challenge, she actually loathes horror movies and avoids watching them whenever possible.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of “fear acting,” she has managed to turn her real-life aversion into some of the most convincing performances in modern horror. Outside of the horror realm, the 42-year-old actress is currently enjoying a massive professional peak.

She recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role as Dawn Staples in The Smashing Machine, a gritty MMA biopic directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. To play the part, she underwent a significant transformation that included a push-up bra and long acrylic nails, jokingly remarking that her performance should have been sponsored by WonderBra.

Looking ahead to the summer, Blunt is set to star in Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated sci-fi epic Disclosure Day, which is scheduled for release on June 12. The film features a powerhouse ensemble including Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo, with a plot centered on a global alien invasion.

A Super Bowl trailer for the project recently went viral, showing Blunt’s character speaking in a chilling alien tongue. Additionally, fans are eagerly awaiting her return to the world of high fashion in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which arrives in theaters on May 1.

She will reunite with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, with her character now serving as a powerful executive at a luxury conglomerate. Rumors also continue to swirl about a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel filming later this year, proving that while she may hate being scared, she isn’t afraid of a busy schedule.
