A chilling new trailer has dropped for Lee Cronin’s horror film The Mummy, giving fans their first real look at the terrifying story ahead. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the movie in theaters and IMAX on April 17. This project is separate from the Brendan Fraser Mummy films and promises a darker, more mysterious take on the legend.

The Mummy follows a family haunted by a long-lost daughter. The trailer shows that the journalist’s young daughter vanished into the desert without explanation, only to return eight years later. What should have been a happy reunion quickly turns into a nightmare, according to the official synopsis.

Lee Cronin, who both wrote and directed the film, is best known for 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, the latest installment in Sam Raimi’s iconic franchise. He previously directed The Hole in the Ground (2019) and is now set to executive produce the upcoming Evil Dead Burn and Evil Dead Wrath.

The cast includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón. Producers James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville are behind the project, with Cronin, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher serving as executive producers.

Speaking to IGN about the movie, Cronin said, “This is a very different kind of Mummy movie… The movie itself really is a mystery, and it’s a puzzle box, which was part of my draw towards it. I think for me what’s really interesting and exciting, certainly even from childhood and being drawn towards Egyptian lore and that entire world, is the secrets that exist and the hidden things. So the movie that I wanted to make was reflective of that idea of deep, buried secrets and things we may not know about. This movie is coming from a very different place, and it’s not even a reinvention of mummy lore; it’s looking into darker places and doing something different with what we think we might already know.”

With the first trailer now online, fans can get a glimpse of Cronin’s signature horror style, blending suspense, mystery, and supernatural dread. The Mummy looks set to add another chilling chapter to Cronin’s growing reputation as one of horror’s most inventive directors.

Cronin’s approach to The Mummy is exciting because he’s taking a familiar story and making it feel completely unpredictable. What do you think about this new take on the classic tale? Share your thoughts in the comments.
