‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Test Screenings Are Reportedly Exceeding What Marvel and Sony Were Even Hoping For
The early buzz surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker is officially hard to ignore. Entertainment commentator John Campea revealed on The John Campea Show that insider sources had spoken to him about early test screenings for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘, with the word given to him being that “the reactions have been better than they hoped” and that “beyond excellent” has been the overall response. That kind of language, coming from a source close to the production, has set the fan community ablaze.
Campea was not alone in the positive early word, as scooper MTTSH also separately reported hearing that reactions from an internal screening were “overwhelmingly positive.” What makes this doubly significant is that studios typically run test screenings to identify problems, not to fish for compliments, making a descriptor as confident as “beyond excellent” all the more meaningful.
The enthusiasm is not limited to outside observers either. Director Destin Daniel Cretton personally confirmed that screenings had already taken place, telling Deadline that he was “really excited about the small test screenings and how it’s connecting with an audience,” adding that the film has “all the heart and humour you would want from a Spider-Man movie.” Crucially, Cretton described the film as being, at its core, “about relearning how to connect with people,” a thematic anchor that feels especially resonant given where Peter Parker has been left.
The story picks up four years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, with Peter now living entirely alone after voluntarily erasing himself from the memories of everyone he loves, fighting crime in a New York that no longer knows his name while a surprising physical evolution threatens his existence and a dangerous new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced. The film’s ensemble includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Michael Mando returning as Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III confirmed as Tombstone.
Amid the positive chatter, Holland confirmed in an interview with GQ that reshoots had been taking place in London, though he was quick to downplay any concern, saying “the movie works and sings as it is” and describing the additional work as “just adding the icing on the cake.” He noted the team was “finding some ways to add a little bit more humor” and “layering in a villain plotline in a new way,” which has sparked plenty of speculation about which of the film’s many antagonists is receiving expanded treatment.
The positive test screening reports carry extra weight given that Marvel has experienced mixed results with some recent releases, making a potentially crowd-pleasing ‘Spider-Man’ outing especially important for the franchise heading into a massive year. The film is scheduled to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU. If the early whispers hold up, it could be shaping up to be exactly the shot in the arm that Marvel has been waiting for.
