Jim Carrey brought the audience to its feet at the 51st César Awards in France, where he was presented with an honorary César recognizing his long career in film. According to reports from the ceremony, the Hollywood actor surprised the crowd by delivering his entire acceptance speech in French.

The award, which is often given to an international film star, went to Carrey this year. He follows past recipients such as Julia Roberts. The event celebrated French cinema, but Carrey became one of the night’s biggest highlights.

The actor, known around the world for films like The Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, was introduced by director Michel Gondry. Gondry worked with Carrey more than two decades ago on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the reunion added a personal touch to the moment.

Speaking in French with a clear American accent, Carrey reflected on his craft. “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.” The audience responded warmly to his effort to speak their language.

Carrey also shared a family story. He said that centuries ago, his ancestor Marc-François Carré was born in Saint-Malo, France, before moving to Canada. Playing with the meaning of his last name, he added, “Tonight with this magnificent honor, this square (carré in French) has come full circle.” The comment drew laughter and applause.

The actor attended the ceremony with his daughter Jane, his grandson Jackson, and his girlfriend Mina. During his speech, he thanked them directly. “Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Mina. I love you, Mina. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father. Percy Joseph Carrey who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.” His words were emotional and personal, and the crowd listened closely.

At the end, Carrey showed his sense of humor once again. “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.” The joke brought more laughter and applause from the room.

The 51st César Awards are one of France’s most important film events, often compared to the Oscars in the United States. This year, however, many attendees and viewers will likely remember Carrey’s speech as one of the standout moments of the night.
