The SAG-AFTRA Awards recently celebrated a career-defining moment for Michael B. Jordan, who took home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. The 39-year-old actor was recognized for his demanding dual performance as the twins Smoke and Stack Moore in Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror sensation, Sinners.

During the ceremony on March 1, Jordan appeared genuinely stunned as he approached the stage to a standing ovation. After receiving the award from presenter Viola Davis, he admitted to the crowd that he was at a loss for words and had not anticipated the win.

He took a moment to acknowledge the formidable talent in his category, which included Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons. Jordan expressed a deep sense of privilege to be recognized alongside actors he has long admired, noting that the entire journey has been surreal.

The Creed star also reflected on his humble beginnings in Newark, New Jersey, recalling the early days of his career. He shared a touching tribute to his mother, Donna, who frequently drove him to New York City for auditions during their leanest years.

He reminisced about the financial struggles they faced, such as searching for gas money or enough change to cover the Holland Tunnel toll. To him, standing on that stage represented a full-circle moment for that young kid from Jersey who just wanted a chance.

Jordan reserved special praise for Ryan Coogler, his longtime creative partner, thanking the director for providing a fearless environment to explore the truth of his characters. This collaboration marks another successful chapter in a partnership that includes Fruitvale Station and Black Panther.

The evening proved to be a sweep for the Sinners team, as the ensemble later secured the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Jordan specifically shouted out his co-stars, including Delroy Lindo, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku, for their collective hard work.

Closing his speech, Jordan spoke directly to the industry peers who have watched him mature on screen over the last two decades. He noted that the consistent encouragement from the acting community has been the primary fuel for his growth and dedication to the craft.

The victory at the SAG Awards adds to an impressive awards season for the actor, who has already garnered nods from the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice. Additionally, he recently celebrated a win at the NAACP Image Awards for the film’s ensemble and is currently eyeing the upcoming Academy Awards.

Sinners serves as a high-stakes supernatural thriller that reunites Jordan and Coogler in a 1930s Jim Crow-era setting infused with gothic horror elements. The film features a star-studded supporting cast, including Jack O’Connell and Jayme Lawson, further cementing it as a critical and commercial powerhouse.

Michael B. Jordan has remained incredibly active both in front of and behind the lens. He recently made his directorial debut with Creed III, which was a massive box office success and solidified his status as a leading filmmaker in Hollywood.

Looking ahead, Jordan is set to return to the I Am Legend franchise, starring alongside Will Smith in a highly anticipated sequel. He is also attached to a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, a project that allows him to step into the shoes of a suave, high-stakes art thief.

His production company, Outlier Society, continues to develop a wide range of diverse stories, including a potential Static Shock film for the DC universe. Between his roles as an actor, producer, and director, Jordan has become one of the most influential figures in modern cinema.
