Harry Styles’ new album, Disco All The Time. Kiss, Occasionally, has fans talking about more than just its retro-inspired sound. Many listeners believe one song, Paint By Numbers, hints at his past relationship with director Olivia Wilde. The song has sparked discussion online, with fans analyzing the lyrics for connections to their 2021–2022 romance.

In Paint By Numbers, Styles sings, “Holding the weight of the American children whose hearts you break / Was it a tragedy when you told her / I’m not even thirty-three?” Fans think the lines could reference Wilde’s two children, who accompanied her during Styles’ Love On Tour, and the age gap between him and Wilde, which may have contributed to the end of their relationship.

Styles has not directly confirmed the meaning of the song, but fans are speculating nonetheless. On his album’s release day, March 6, listeners quickly shared their theories online, linking the emotional ballad to his time with Wilde.

The track also opens with reflection on fame: “Oh, what a gift it is to be noticed / But it’s nothing to do with me.” The chorus adds a reflective tone: “It’s a lifetime of learning to paint by numbers / And watching the colors run.”

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe before the album dropped, Styles talked about his writing process. “I think it was about meeting some people, whatever level of trust to just spend time with someone and saying yes to things,” he said. He explained that the album captures experiences that shaped him, from friendships to relationships, and how honesty plays a key role in those connections.

“Everything you imagine about friendship and relationships and honesty and being around friends who are really dedicated to honesty in a way that is terrifying if you’re not,” he added, “Being in friendships and watching people be in relationship to each other… why wouldn’t it be OK for you to be that version of yourself?”

Styles and Wilde met on the set of her film Don’t Worry Darling, and their relationship became a media focus partly due to Wilde’s split from Jason Sudeikis. Wilde previously clarified in Vanity Fair that the narrative suggesting she left Sudeikis for Styles was false. “Our relationship was over long before I met Harry. Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight,” she said. She also noted the challenges of co-parenting during the pandemic, saying it was best for the children to live in separate households.

After Wilde, Styles dated Taylor Russell from 2023 to 2024 and has since been linked to Zoë Kravitz. Despite moving on, fans remain intrigued by the way his music might revisit past experiences, showing a more personal and reflective side of the pop star.

This album, especially Paint By Numbers, seems to remind listeners that Styles draws heavily from his personal life for inspiration. It highlights the complexities of fame, relationships, and personal growth in ways that continue to resonate with his audience.
