Ron Weasley Is Coming Back to Hogwarts, and Harry Potter Fans Are Emotional
Nearly two decades have passed since audiences last watched the golden trio complete their journey on the big screen, yet the pull of Hogwarts has never really faded for the actors who grew up inside it. One by one, members of that original cast have found their way back into the wizarding world, whether through anniversary specials, stage work, or the occasional cameo.
Now, one of the most beloved members of that trio is preparing to step back into robes he hasn’t worn in years, and fans are already counting down the days.
Rupert Grint is officially reprising his role as Ron Weasley on Broadway, joining the cast of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child‘ at the Lyric Theatre for a 17-week limited engagement running from February 2 through May 30, 2027. Grint, who starred as Ron across all eight original ‘Harry Potter’ films between 2001 and 2011, will step into an adult version of the character in the stage production, which is set nineteen years after the events of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’
Grint’s casting follows the success of fellow franchise alum Tom Felton’s run as an older Draco Malfoy, which has been extended through January 3 after driving a significant boost at the box office. Reflecting on the decision to return, Grint said Ron Weasley has been part of him since he was eleven years old, adding that stepping back into the role now that he’s a father himself feels both “very familiar and completely new,” a sentiment he shared in a statement reported by Variety.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender praised Grint’s original performance as having defined what it meant to be a loyal and brave friend for an entire generation of fans, noting how audiences watched him grow up through the role while he preserved the character’s core traits, including his humor and unmistakable grin. They added that his return isn’t simply a nostalgic revisit, but rather a continuation of a journey he began as a child, one shaped by everything he’s accomplished since, including his acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End.
Grint’s Broadway history runs deeper than this new role suggests, having made his debut there in 2014’s ‘It’s Only a Play’ alongside Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, along with a West End debut in Jez Butterworth’s ‘Mojo.’ His screen work since the franchise wrapped has spanned projects like ‘Servant,’ ‘Knock at the Cabin,’ and ‘Nightborn,’ showing a career that stretched well beyond the character that first made him famous.
The current Broadway production already features Daniel Fredrick as the existing Ron Weasley, alongside John Skelley as Harry Potter and Rachel Christopher as Hermione Granger, meaning Grint’s arrival will mark a temporary but significant shift in the show’s dynamic once his run begins.
