The widow of Chadwick Boseman, Simone Ledward-Boseman, recently provided a poignant look into the private life they shared during the height of his professional success. Appearing on the Today show on Friday, March 20, she spoke with host Craig Melvin about the silent health struggle the actor faced starting with his 2016 diagnosis.

Simone grew visibly moved while recalling the year 2018, describing it as a period of immense joy that remains difficult to discuss. “It was a beautiful year,” she shared through tears, noting that reflecting on their happiest moments often carries more weight than revisiting the struggles.

The couple, who wed in a private ceremony in 2020, found themselves at the center of a global phenomenon when Black Panther debuted in February 2018. Simone described the profound and international influence of the Marvel blockbuster as something beyond her ability to fully articulate.

She recalled the sight of children everywhere dressing as her husband’s character and the widespread community efforts to ensure students could see the film. “He was just so deserving of all the success, and kids were dressing up like him, and people are buying out theaters and taking school kids to watch this film, and he’s just being celebrated everywhere we go,” she stated.

Unknown to the public at the time, the festive atmosphere surrounding the film’s release coincided with a positive medical update for the actor. “It did feel like, you know, they didn’t know we were celebrating that he had a clear scan, but we were celebrating that too. It felt like we got another chance,” Simone explained.

The hope of that period was eventually met with tragedy when the illness returned the following year, leading to his passing in August 2020. Throughout his four-year battle with colon cancer, Boseman chose to keep his condition entirely confidential, a decision his widow describes as a deliberate choice to focus on his mission.

Simone remembered their initial optimism, noting that both she and Chadwick believed he would eventually overcome the diagnosis despite the obvious fear it caused. “I think when he was initially diagnosed, we both felt very sure that he would make it through,” she said, emphasizing that they viewed it as a hurdle he would eventually clear.

Regarding his choice to stay silent about his health, Simone suggested that the focus should remain on his contributions and how he spent his time. “The fact that he wouldn’t let cancer get in the way of what he was here to do, let that be the lesson,” she urged during the interview.

As of March, the legacy of Chadwick Boseman continues to influence the entertainment landscape and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the franchise has moved forward with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, his portrayal of T’Challa remains the definitive foundation for that corner of the series.

In current Marvel news, the studio is moving toward the 2027 release of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to pay homage to the original phases of the universe. Fans also continue to celebrate his posthumous work, including his final performance in the series What If…?, which recently concluded its run on Disney+.

Simone Ledward-Boseman has dedicated much of her time this year to the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts, which recently announced new scholarships for Howard University students. She also continues to advocate for colon cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of early screening for younger adults.

The actor’s filmography, including his celebrated turns as Jackie Robinson and James Brown, remains a staple of film education and historical drama. His final live-action role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom continues to be cited by new actors as a masterclass in screen presence and dedication.

The Today show segment serves as a reminder of the quiet strength required to navigate a public life while facing a private crisis. As Simone noted, while the pain of loss persists, the sharpness of the grief has softened over the six years since his passing.
