Usher is speaking out about his respect for Sean “Diddy” Combs, despite the music mogul’s current legal troubles. In a recent interview with Forbes’ The Enterprise Zone, the R&B star, 47, reflected on his decades-long friendship and professional relationship with Combs, who is serving a 50-month prison sentence for two charges related to transportation to engage in p******.

During the interview, Forbes senior writer Jabari Young asked Usher for one-word reactions to influential figures in his life. When it came to Combs, Usher replied, “Legacy.”

Usher acknowledged the controversy surrounding Combs but emphasized his own perspective. “We can’t ignore the reality of the history,” he said. “In many ways, I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer. I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs because my experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been misrepresented.”

Usher and Combs have worked together since the singer was a teenager, and their friendship has stayed strong over the years. “I can’t, with any sense of humanity, not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as businessmen, for us as people who transition culture and ideas into something that’s tangible and becomes business. So many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that. And that’s why I see him as legacy,” Usher said.

Referring to Combs by his former nickname “Puff,” Usher called him a mentor and described him as “a really, really hard teacher” who helped him learn important lessons in real time. “I put respect on his name because I realized that what I learned as a businessman before I even understood what business was came as a result of seeing the incredible things that he was able to do and the way that he positioned himself as a businessman,” he added.

Combs’ legal situation has drawn widespread attention. In September 2024, he was indicted on charges of s** trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in p*****. He has denied the allegations brought by dozens of accusers. After his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in p*****, Combs began serving his 50-month sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey. His release date is now scheduled for April 25, 2028.

Usher’s comments highlight the complexity of his relationship with Combs, showing admiration for the impact the producer has had on music, culture, and business, even as legal issues loom over him. “So many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that,” Usher emphasized.

Usher’s words show loyalty and gratitude for a mentor who shaped his career. It’s a reminder that personal experience and public perception don’t always match. What do you think about Usher’s take on Diddy’s legacy? Share your thoughts in the comments.
