Leonardo DiCaprio has spent the better part of three decades in a position few actors ever reach. His uncanny ability to select high-caliber scripts has allowed him to consistently transform even the most polarizing premises into cinematic events.

While his career is defined by a nearly unbroken string of critical successes, he is not immune to the occasional project that fails to land with the public or critics. A primary example of his influential presence is the recent awards season contender One Battle After Another.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and released in September 2025, the film saw DiCaprio take on the role of a former revolutionary living off the grid. Despite being a box office disappointment relative to its massive budget, the film dominated the 98th Academy Awards, winning six Oscars, including Best Picture.

This pattern of prestige follows DiCaprio even when a film divides audiences, as seen with Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up. That star-studded parable was viewed by some as a smug example of industry self-importance, yet it still secured a Best Picture nomination.

In fact, nearly every leading role he has taken since 2012 has resulted in a Best Picture shortlist appearance, proving his name alone serves as a guarantee of quality. However, the 1995 film Total Eclipse stands as a rare moment where his instincts didn’t result in a universal hit.

Portraying the poet Arthur Rimbaud, DiCaprio delivered a daring performance that was met with significant resistance. “People hated it,” the actor later remarked, acknowledging that the film was a difficult sell for both general audiences and devotees of the poet’s work.

Reflecting on the mid-90s project, he noted that the intense focus on a specific intimate scene between himself and co-star David Thewlis became a major distraction. He found it frustrating how a single moment overshadowed the broader artistic intent of the film.

“I think the only people who liked Total Eclipse were people who liked Rimbaud,” he pondered, before noting that even those fans were often left disappointed by the adaptation.

As of March, DiCaprio is currently in the Czech Republic filming his next major collaboration with director Martin Scorsese. The project, titled What Happens at Night, is a Gothic psychological horror film based on the novel by Peter Cameron.

DiCaprio stars as a man traveling to a snowy European town with his wife, played by Jennifer Lawrence, to adopt a child, only to find themselves trapped in a surreal hotel nightmare. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.

This marks a reunion for DiCaprio and Lawrence following their work together on Don’t Look Up, and it continues the actor’s long-standing creative partnership with Scorsese. The film is one of the most anticipated releases for the 2027 cinematic calendar.
