Golf star Tiger Woods has been released on bail after being arrested in Florida on charges of driving under the influence. The arrest came after Woods rolled his Land Rover in a crash in Jupiter Island on Friday, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. He faces additional charges for property damage and refusing to submit to a lawful test.

Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods, 50, rolled his vehicle after clipping a truck while allegedly trying to pass it at a high speed. “Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment,” Budensiek said, adding that DUI investigators conducted several roadside tests. Woods passed a breathalyser test with “triple zeros” but refused a urine test. “He has a right to refuse that test. There is a statute which he will be charged with for refusing to take that test,” Budensiek said.

No one was hurt in the crash. Woods had to crawl out of the passenger side of the vehicle. He spent eight hours in jail, which is the minimum required under state law, before being released on bail. Budensiek said officers were not suspicious of alcohol being involved. “We will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash,” he added.

US President Donald Trump commented on the incident, saying, “I feel so badly. He has got some difficulty. There was an accident. That’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person – an amazing man.”

The charges are misdemeanors, not felonies.

This is another setback for Woods, who has faced serious injuries in recent years. He is still recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon in March 2025 and back surgery in October. He played in the TGL indoor league finals this week, marking his first competitive golf in more than a year. Woods has not ruled out playing in next month’s Masters at Augusta National, where he has won five times.

Woods has had a history of accidents and legal issues. In 2009, he hit a fire hydrant, a tree, and hedges outside his home. In 2017, he was found slumped behind the wheel of his Mercedes in Florida, with legal medications and marijuana’s active ingredient in his system. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a year’s probation.

According to golf correspondent Iain Carter, this latest incident makes it unlikely Woods will be ready for the Masters. “That looks ever more unlikely given the scenario that is playing out in Florida,” Carter wrote, noting that Woods’ injuries and recent crash could keep him from competing in the tournament.

This is a tough moment for Woods, who has battled so many injuries and setbacks over his career. Even with all his achievements, this incident reminds us that recovery and life off the course can be unpredictable. What do you think about Woods’ situation and his chances at the Masters?
