The upcoming cinematic return to Middle-earth will feature a fresh face in one of its most legendary roles, as director Andy Serkis has officially confirmed a search for a new Aragorn. With Viggo Mortensen, now 67, not returning for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the production is looking for a younger actor to portray the Ranger during the years preceding the original trilogy.

Serkis noted that while the team is currently in the process of recasting, they are making significant progress toward finding the right person to lead the 2027 film. This update follows a wave of online speculation sparked by a recent podcast appearance by Elijah Wood. During a conversation on Happy Sad Confused on Thursday, the host mentioned rumors that English actor Leo Woodall had been tapped for the part.

Wood seemed to acknowledge the difficulty of the task ahead for whoever takes the mantle, noting, “Those are tough boots [to fill], man. That is tough. I can’t imagine. But that’s gonna be great.” While some fans interpreted the exchange as a confirmation of Woodall’s involvement, the 29-year-old actor’s casting remains officially unannounced.

Woodall, a self-proclaimed superfan of the franchise, has previously spoken about his childhood spent role-playing as the character. Despite the lack of a formal statement from the studio, the actor’s rising profile and personal connection to the source material have made him a frontrunner in public discussions about the project.

The production, which is being overseen by Peter Jackson and his longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, has remained remarkably secretive regarding the rest of the ensemble. Beyond Serkis reprising his role as the title character, the only other confirmed cast member is Kate Winslet, though her specific role is being kept under wraps.

Sir Ian McKellen has hinted that Gandalf will appear in the story, but it has not yet been clarified if he or Wood will definitely return to their respective legacy roles. Leo Woodall has had a prolific run leading up to these rumors, recently starring in the Netflix series Vladimir and the Apple TV+ thriller Prime Target.

He is also set to appear in the upcoming drama Tony and the highly anticipated film Nomad. These projects have cemented his reputation as a versatile talent capable of anchoring high-stakes narratives.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently preparing for a 2027 release, with principal photography expected to begin in New Zealand later this year. The story will bridge the gap between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on the titular creature’s physical and psychological journey.

As the studio moves closer to an official announcement, the anticipation for this new chapter in the Tolkien legendarium continues to grow among global audiences.
