British actor John Nolan, known to many fans for his roles in the Batman film series and the television drama Person of Interest, has died at the age of 87. His death was reported by the Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald.

Nolan built a long career in theater, film, and television over several decades. While younger audiences may recognize him from modern screen roles, he was deeply respected in British stage acting long before appearing in Hollywood productions.

In director Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, he played Douglas Fredericks, a Wayne Enterprises board member, appearing in both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises. He also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s films Following and Dunkirk.

His connection to the Nolan family extended beyond film. John Nolan was the uncle of both Christopher Nolan and writer-producer Jonathan Nolan. On Jonathan Nolan’s series Person of Interest, he played John Greer, a major villain linked to the Samaritan artificial intelligence storyline. His character became one of the show’s most memorable antagonists.

Before his film and television fame, Nolan had a major stage career in Britain. He worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and later with the National Theatre. He performed in many classic productions and earned praise for his Shakespeare work early in his career.

He was born in London in 1938 and trained in acting before becoming part of respected theater groups. Over time, he expanded into television, appearing in many British series, including Doomwatch, The Sweeney, and Silent Witness.

His acting career also included films such as Bequest to the Nation and Terror, along with voice work heard by airline passengers through Discovery Channel in-flight entertainment programming.

Nolan is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, their two children, and grandchildren. He and Hartman had been married since 1975.

His death marks the loss of a performer whose work reached across generations, from classic British theater to major global film franchises.

Actors like John Nolan often do not get the same public attention as leading stars, yet they are essential to the strength of every major production. His career shows how lasting impact can come from steady, skilled work over many years. What do you remember most about John Nolan’s performances? Share your thoughts in the comments.
