Tom Cruise has spent years working in science fiction and action films. Some of them became big hits, while others had mixed results but still shaped his career. Films like Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion helped define his modern sci-fi image. His work in the Mission: Impossible series also often includes advanced tech that feels close to science fiction.

But there is one major sci-fi project he wanted to lead that never came his way. That film was John Carter. According to reports and interviews covered by TheWrap, Cruise showed strong interest in playing the main character, but the role went to someone else.

John Carter was based on the old “John Carter of Mars” books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The project was designed as a huge fantasy space adventure. It had a strong creative team behind it. Andrew Stanton, known for directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E, made his live-action debut with this movie. The script also had input from writer Michael Chabon, who worked on Spider-Man 2. The cast included well-known names like Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, and Mark Strong.

Even with strong talent involved, the film faced problems before and after release. The production cost was extremely high, and expectations were even higher. In the end, the movie struggled at the box office and became known as one of Disney’s biggest financial losses, even though many viewers and critics said it was not a terrible film.

A key part of the story is how casting unfolded. Director Andrew Stanton later explained in an interview with TheWrap that choosing the lead role was difficult. A long list of actors was considered. Taylor Kitsch was eventually chosen for the role of John Carter.

Stanton also confirmed that Cruise had shown real interest in the part. However, the director had already leaned toward another choice by the time Cruise entered the discussion. He explained that Cruise was professional and respectful during conversations, but the casting process was already moving in a different direction.

This was not the first time Cruise was linked to the project. Back in the 1990s, there were early Disney discussions about making a version of John Carter with Cruise attached. That earlier version never moved forward. Different directors and writers were considered over the years, and the project changed direction multiple times before the final film was made.

When John Carter finally released in 2012, it opened with a huge budget behind it and a wide global rollout. It earned close to 300 million dollars worldwide. However, because of production and marketing costs, it still ended up with major financial losses for the studio. Reports at the time said the movie needed far more than it earned to break even.

The film had a mixed reaction from audiences and critics. Some viewers liked the visuals and action. Others felt the story was uneven and hard to follow. Reviews ranged from praise for its scale and ambition to criticism of its pacing and structure. Over time, it became known as a film that had strong ideas but failed to connect on a larger level.

Despite its failure, John Carter still remains part of Hollywood discussion because of its scale, its production history, and the many famous names connected to it over the years.

Tom Cruise, meanwhile, continued to build his own sci-fi path through different projects that were more successful, even if this one major opportunity slipped away.

John Carter is a clear example of how even big budgets and strong teams do not always guarantee success. Casting choices and timing can change everything in Hollywood. It also shows how many “what if” stories exist behind major films. What do you think about this? Should Tom Cruise have played the role, or was it better left as it was?
