CinemaCon in Las Vegas brought a big surprise for comedy fans as Mel Brooks confirmed the official title of the long-awaited sequel to his 1987 sci-fi parody “Spaceballs.”

According to information shared during the CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday, Brooks appeared through a video message to announce that the follow-up film will be called “Spaceballs: The New One.” The reveal quickly got attention from fans of the original cult classic.

The new film continues the story from Brooks’ original movie, which spoofed the “Star Wars” universe and became a major comedy hit. Several familiar faces are set to return, including Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Brooks himself.

Alongside the returning cast, the sequel is also bringing in new actors. Lewis Pullman, son of Bill Pullman, is joining the project, along with Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan. Their exact roles have not been shared yet, but one confirmed detail is that Lewis Pullman will play the son of his father’s character, continuing the story of Lone Starr’s family.

During the CinemaCon presentation, early footage from the film was also shown to attendees. The clip was described as intentionally confusing and comedic, with a narrator warning that the scenes were not meant to make full sense on their own. One moment reportedly featured a humorous bathroom scene involving a character resembling a Na’vi from “Avatar,” adding to the film’s absurd style of comedy.

Josh Greenbaum is directing the project. The screenplay comes from Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. The film is being produced by Mel Brooks, Gad, Greenbaum, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody through Imagine Entertainment and other partners.

Josh Gad previously teased the project in a social media post in 2024, saying he believed the script could be one of the funniest things he has ever worked on. He also described working with his writing partners as a very positive experience.

The sequel is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 23, 2027, with Amazon MGM Studios handling the release.
