A “World War Z” Sequel Is Now in Development at Paramount, Studio Confirms
Paramount Pictures is once again moving forward with plans for a sequel to “World War Z,” according to information shared during a studio update. The project has gone through a long and unstable development process, with multiple attempts to bring it back over the years.
The original film was released in 2013 and starred Brad Pitt. It was adapted from Max Brooks’ novel and became a major global hit, earning about 540 million dollars at the box office. Even with its commercial success, the movie faced well-documented production changes, including a major rewrite and reshoot of its ending.
After the film came out, Paramount quickly explored the idea of building a larger franchise. Early discussions even included the idea of turning it into a trilogy. However, the sequel faced repeated delays as the creative direction kept shifting.
Different filmmakers were attached at various stages. J.A. Bayona was at one point set to direct, and writer Steven Knight worked on the screenplay. Later, David Fincher entered talks to take over directing duties, with Brad Pitt expected to return as Gerry Lane. Despite strong momentum at times, the project never moved into full production.
By 2019, the sequel was officially shut down after years of development. Reports at the time indicated that pre-production had already been underway, but the project was canceled before filming began. One of the reasons cited by industry sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, was that restrictions from the Chinese government on films featuring zombies or similar themes created major distribution concerns for the studio.
Now, Paramount has confirmed that the idea is being revisited once again. No cast, director, or release timeline has been announced so far, and it is not clear if Brad Pitt will return for the new version.
The original “World War Z” remains one of the more successful modern zombie films, and the studio’s renewed interest shows that the franchise is still not fully closed. The future direction of the sequel is still unknown.
This is a franchise that has clearly struggled behind the scenes, even after a strong first film. The repeated stops and restarts show how complicated big studio projects can become. If Paramount manages to finally move forward, the key question will be whether they keep Brad Pitt and what direction they take the story in.
