Charlize Theron (50) Opens Up About Teenage Trauma After Her Mother Fatally Shot Her Father, Says She Is Not Haunted By Trauma
Charlize Theron has spoken in detail about a traumatic event from her teenage years, recalling the night her father was killed after a violent incident at home in South Africa.
In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, published on April 18, the actress explained that the situation happened in 1991 when she was 15 years old. She said her father had been heavily drinking and became aggressive during an argument that escalated at their home.
Theron described how the conflict started after what seemed like a small misunderstanding earlier that day. She said her father reacted strongly when she briefly went into a house without greeting him while he was drinking with relatives. The situation then escalated into anger and shouting.
Later that night, she and her mother returned home, and she suggested that her mother should consider separating from her father because of repeated incidents of violence. She said it felt clear to both of them that something was seriously wrong.
When her father came home later, Theron said she immediately felt that the situation was dangerous. She described hearing the way he drove up to the property and sensing that something bad could happen.
She explained that her father forced his way into the house during the confrontation. According to her account, the situation became life-threatening, and her mother acted in self-defense. Her mother used a firearm during the incident, which resulted in her father’s death. Theron also said no one else in the home was physically harmed.
Speaking about why she has chosen to talk about it publicly, Theron said she does not feel “haunted” by what happened. In her words, “I’m not haunted by this stuff anymore.” She also explained that sharing her story is important to her because it may help others who have experienced similar situations.
She said many people live through domestic violence in silence and often feel alone in those experiences. For her, speaking about it is a way to bring attention to that reality and reduce stigma around it.
Over the years, Theron has also worked on issues related to domestic violence. She has supported campaigns and organizations focused on helping survivors and raising awareness about abuse and safety in the home.
Her comments highlight both the personal impact of the event and her long-term focus on supporting others who have gone through similar trauma.
