Charlize Theron has clarified her recent comments about artificial intelligence after facing criticism online. The discussion started when she spoke about AI and its possible impact on acting careers, including that of actors like Timothée Chalamet.

Her earlier remarks came during a conversation where she reacted to Chalamet’s comments about traditional art forms like ballet and opera. She called his statement “reckless” and even joked about wanting to confront him over it. The moment gained attention, but it was her AI prediction that caused the bigger reaction.

Theron suggested that in the future, AI could potentially replace some film performances. She also said live stage performances would be harder to replicate. However, her wording sparked debate and criticism on social media, with many questioning her take on the topic.

Later, at the premiere of her new film Apex, she spoke to Variety and admitted she regretted how she phrased her comments.

She directly addressed the situation, saying, “Honey, I talked out of my ass. I don’t know what’s going to happen in 10 years, okay? Nobody does. Nobody knows what’s going to happen in 10 years.”

She then explained that her point was more about live performance and how difficult it would be for AI to fully copy it. She gave an example, mentioning that even if technology advances, it still may not match real human performers.

“But I assume that a living, live performance would be hard [to replicate with AI]. And then someone’s like, ‘There’s a dancing robot in Hong Kong’. But he’s not Misty Copeland, OK?” she said.

Theron added that she is focused on her current work and not future predictions. She also made it clear that her latest film was made without AI involvement.

The discussion around AI in entertainment continues to grow in Hollywood. The issue played a major role in the 2023 industry strikes involving SAG-AFTRA, where performers pushed for protections against the use of digital likenesses.

Since then, some protections have been added, including rules around using actors’ images after death. Still, AI remains a major topic of debate in the industry.

Theron’s response shows how quickly AI discussions can spiral once they go online. It is a complex topic, and even experienced actors can get caught up in it. What do you think about her comments and the role of AI in acting? Share your thoughts in the comments.
