‘Dexter’ Breakout Erik King Could Be the MCU’s Blue Marvel, With a ‘Wonder Man’ Season 2 Debut on the Horizon

Marvel’s next major superhero introduction may be closer than fans think. According to DiscussingFilm, Erik King, widely recognized for his commanding turn as Sergeant James Doakes on Showtime’s ‘Dexter’, is currently in the running to play Blue Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his debut reportedly set for ‘Wonder Man’ Season 2 before the character branches off into a separate project.

King is best known for his portrayal of Sergeant James Doakes on Showtime’s ‘Dexter’, a performance that earned him a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor on Television in 2008. Beyond that role, he has built a decades-long career with credits spanning ‘Oz’, ‘National Treasure’, and Brian De Palma’s ‘Casualties of War’. His physicality, gravitas, and dramatic range make him a natural fit for a character as layered and imposing as Blue Marvel.

Blue Marvel, whose real name is Adam Brashear, is a former Korean War veteran and physics professor who became a living antimatter reactor after a catastrophic lab explosion. He operated as a beloved masked superhero in the early 1960s, but when his mask was damaged in battle and revealed him to be a Black man, the racist social climate of the era led to government pressure forcing him into retirement. CBR ranked him first on their list of Marvel Comics‘ most powerful African American characters, and fan interest in seeing him join the MCU has been growing for years.

The timing of the casting report lines up neatly with the current momentum around ‘Wonder Man’. ‘Wonder Man’ was released in its entirety on Disney+ on January 27, 2026, comprising eight episodes as part of Phase Six of the MCU under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which signals a focus on grounded, character-driven storytelling with less direct connectivity to the larger franchise. The show stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as aspiring actor Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery, and it debuted to strong reviews, currently holding a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series was officially renewed for a second season in March 2026, making it one of the rare live-action MCU Disney+ shows to earn a continuation, joining ‘Loki’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in that exclusive club. Both Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley will return, alongside creator Destin Daniel Cretton and showrunner Andrew Guest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Season 2 is currently being written and is still in the early stages, with Guest confirming that the new season will maintain the same tone as the first.

Introducing Blue Marvel through ‘Wonder Man’ Season 2 would be a smart narrative move on Marvel’s part. Both characters share a connection to a Hollywood-adjacent world defined by spectacle and identity, and planting Adam Brashear in that environment before giving him his own vehicle mirrors how the MCU has successfully launched characters through ensemble or supporting appearances before their solo outings.

If the Erik King report proves accurate, Marvel may be quietly building toward one of its most anticipated character debuts in years, and fans of the source material will already know just how massive that arrival could be.
