Tom Hiddleston has been one of the most guarded members of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast when it comes to details, but his latest comments about the film are the most electric yet. The actor, who has played Loki across every phase of the MCU since 2011, recently told fans that the upcoming Marvel epic is going to be “magnificent” and will defy every expectation they have going in. More striking still, he said the script defied his own expectations the moment he read it, calling it “extraordinary” in one of his most unguarded reactions to the project.

The remarks follow a GQ cover story in which Hiddleston confirmed he had recently wrapped his filming on the project, describing it to the magazine as “monumental.” He told the outlet, “The center of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before,” a remarkable claim from someone who has watched the franchise operate at its most ambitious heights across more than a decade of films.

Hiddleston is one of only two actors, alongside Sebastian Stan, to have appeared across all six phases of the MCU, giving his enthusiasm for ‘Doomsday’ particular weight. When he says the story broke new ground, he is speaking from a vantage point few others in Hollywood share. Ahead of filming, he also spoke with Men’s Health and teased that his portrayal of Loki this time around would feel different, describing the version audiences will see as “new in his own way,” a hint that the God of Stories has changed considerably since the ‘Loki’ Season 2 finale.

At the end of ‘Loki’ Season 2, the character transformed into the God of Stories and took on the enormous responsibility of holding the branching timelines of the entire Multiverse together, a role that puts him squarely in the path of the villainous Doctor Doom in ‘Doomsday.’ That transformation gives Loki a story arc unlike anything the character has had before, and it explains why Hiddleston’s excitement feels less like promotional boilerplate and more like genuine disbelief at what he was handed on the page.

Hiddleston has also described having genuine “pinch me” moments on set, particularly when crossing paths with newly confirmed X-Men cast members Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen during production. The film’s massive ensemble also includes Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Paul Rudd, and Florence Pugh, alongside the X-Men stars making their formal MCU debut. A confirmed reunion between Loki and his adopted brother Thor, with Chris Hemsworth returning to the role, adds yet another layer of emotional stakes to what is shaping up to be an unprecedented convergence of Marvel’s past and present.

Robert Downey Jr. is also set to appear in the film, not as Iron Man but as the primary antagonist, Doctor Doom, marking one of the most unexpected character pivots in superhero film history. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ to follow in December 2027. With the Russo Brothers back at the helm and a script that apparently surprised even its most experienced cast member, the anticipation surrounding this film is reaching a fever pitch.

If Hiddleston, someone who has read and kept the secrets of this story for months, still sounds floored by what he encountered on the page, it raises the question: what exactly does ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ have in store for Loki, and are you ready to find out?
