‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Is Delivering the Thrawn vs. Ackbar Showdown Star Wars Has Owed Fans for Decades
Few rivalries in the Star Wars universe carry as much weight as the collision between cunning military genius and unyielding New Republic resistance, and ‘Ahsoka‘ has been quietly laying the groundwork for exactly that kind of conflict since it first arrived on Disney Plus in 2023.
The live-action series, created by Dave Filoni, acts as a direct continuation of ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and centers on the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn as the looming threat to the fragile New Republic. The Season 1 finale saw Thrawn make the jump to hyperspace, with Ezra Bridger stowing away, while Ahsoka and Sabine were left stranded on the distant world of Peridea.
Now, the details emerging from Disney’s Upfronts 2026 presentation are giving longtime fans the kind of news they have been hungry for. Series creator Dave Filoni confirmed the return of Admiral Ackbar, with Filoni telling Deadline, “He’s going head-to-head with Thrawn.” Filoni has further framed the coming conflict as “all-out war” between Grand Admiral Thrawn and the New Republic forces under Ackbar’s command.
The announcement has sent waves through the Star Wars community, and for good reason. Ackbar squaring off against Thrawn feels like something longtime fans have wanted forever, given that both characters have existed on opposite sides of the same galactic struggle for decades without ever directly clashing on screen. Filoni reportedly asked special effects supervisor Neal Scanlan to replicate the original Admiral Ackbar prosthetics from ‘Return of the Jedi’, determined to bring the character back with the same authenticity that made him iconic.
The Ackbar reveal is far from the only headline coming out of the presentation. Hayden Christensen is confirmed to be returning as Anakin Skywalker, and ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Rory McCann is stepping in to play Baylan Skoll, a role originally brought to life by the late Ray Stevenson. Filoni spoke emotionally about Stevenson during the event, calling him “the greatest person, the greatest spirit on the show.”
Rosario Dawson confirmed during the Upfronts presentation that Season 2 will not premiere on Disney Plus until early 2027, surprising fans who had expected the series to arrive in 2026 following a production run that wrapped in the United Kingdom late last year. The season will consist of eight episodes, all written by Filoni, with Bryce Dallas Howard directing two of them alongside Filoni, Jennifer Getzinger, and Anders Engström.
The story appears to be split across two major conflict threads, with Thrawn rebuilding Imperial power in the known galaxy while Ahsoka’s side of the narrative dives deeper into the ancient Force mythology introduced on Peridea. Dawson set the tone for the season herself, warning audiences that “this season, the battles are bigger and the stakes are higher.”
With a once-in-a-franchise showdown between two of Star Wars’ greatest military commanders finally on the table, the question is whether you think ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 can live up to the weight of that Thrawn and Ackbar face-off when it finally arrives.
