‘Man on Fire’ Holds Netflix’s Top Spot for a Second Week as Season 2 Renewal Odds Grow Stronger

Netflix has a new action-thriller that refuses to cool down. ‘Man on Fire’, the streamer’s ambitious adaptation of A.J. Quinnell’s novel series, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a trauma-haunted former Special Forces operative and CIA contractor who is pulled back into a world of violence and revenge after a devastating bombing kills his colleague’s family in Brazil. The seven-episode first season dropped all at once on April 30, 2026, and earned generally positive reviews from critics.

The series is a spiritual reimagining rather than a direct remake, sharing the same central character as the 2004 Denzel Washington film but with Abdul-Mateen II stepping into the role of Creasy for this updated television interpretation. Series creator Kyle Killen serves as showrunner and writer, with ‘Creed II’ director Steven Caple Jr. helming the first two episodes. Critics largely praised the show for touching on emotional and action-packed heights, pointing to Abdul-Mateen II’s devoted and unflinching performance as its strongest asset.

What the numbers are now showing is making the case for a second season almost impossible to ignore. According to What’s on Netflix, ‘Man on Fire’ topped the English-language series chart for the second consecutive week, with its cumulative two-week view count sitting at 23.6 million, including 12.6 million views generated between May 4 and May 10 alone, representing a 1.6 million-view increase compared to its debut week. That kind of week-over-week growth, rather than the typical post-premiere drop-off, signals that the show is still pulling in new audiences well after its initial launch.

Netflix typically tracks viewership data for its original series for anywhere between a month and 90 days before announcing renewal decisions, though there have been instances where green lights have come within just a few days of a strong debut. The sustained chart performance puts ‘Man on Fire’ in strong company. As of its first weekend on the platform, the series had already reached the number-one position in nearly 50 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and South Africa. What’s on Netflix has noted it is now leaning toward a renewal prediction, a meaningful shift in tone from the cautious wait-and-see position the industry typically holds this early.

The creative team has also been candid about where the story could go. Director Steven Caple Jr., speaking to ComicBook, said the future depends on audience engagement, adding “John Creasy is a very interesting character; there’s a lot to say, and that’s certainly someone I would follow.” In an interview with ScreenRant, Abdul-Mateen II said he could see himself playing John Creasy across many more seasons, while making clear he only wants to return if the quality justifies it. The season finale itself already lays groundwork for what comes next, with Creasy receiving a new mission assignment tied to his dark past, leaving the story wide open.

Should a renewal come through, there is no shortage of source material to draw from, as Quinnell’s novel series includes four sequels beyond the first book: ‘The Perfect Kill’, ‘The Blue Ring’, ‘Black Horn’, and ‘Message From Hell’. With viewership holding firm and the creative team already thinking ahead, the only thing left is the official word from Netflix.

Whether you’ve already binged all seven episodes or you’re still on the fence about giving it a watch, there’s no better time than now to weigh in on whether John Creasy deserves a second mission.
