‘The Batman: Part II’ Cast Officially Taking Shape as Matt Reeves Confirms Who’s Returning to Gotham
Nearly three years after Robert Pattinson’s brooding, rain-soaked take on the Dark Knight captivated audiences worldwide, the wheels are finally turning in earnest on ‘The Batman: Part II.’ Director Matt Reeves has been building anticipation steadily in 2026, sharing production tests and teasing announcements across social media as the highly anticipated sequel moves toward a June principal photography start.
Reeves recently shared a first look at the sequel on May 7, with production already undergoing tests with the Batmobile, confirming the film will be set during winter. Reeves has described the sequel as a “very different type of Batman movie,” suggesting a tonal or structural shift from the first installment, and has also changed cinematographers, moving from the original’s Greig Fraser to Erik Messerschmidt.
The official cast confirmations began rolling in on May 13, and they gave fans exactly the familiar faces they were hoping to see. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman, joined by Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez. Reeves teased that even more casting announcements were on the way, signing off one update with a simple “more… tomorrow.”
The returning ensemble is only half the story. Sebastian Stan is set to play Harvey Dent, with Scarlett Johansson joining as Gilda Dent and Charles Dance expected to portray Christopher Dent, making the Dent family a significant narrative thread in the sequel. Speaking to Deadline, Stan described the project as “a really ambitious movie,” adding that he believes it will “blow people away” and “surprise a lot of people.”
The enthusiasm extends to the returning cast as well. When ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley spoke with Serkis in April 2026, the British actor praised how the ‘The Batman: Part II’ script tackles new territory, saying the story “really does speak to Matt as a human being and what he feels about life,” while describing the dynamic between Reeves and Pattinson as “a very close, slightly at odds, but beautiful relationship.” Colin Farrell, meanwhile, confirmed back in October 2025 that he has “an even smaller role in this one,” but expressed contentment, noting he had read the script “from start to finish.”
‘The Batman: Part II’ is currently scheduled to open in theaters on October 1, 2027. Reeves co-wrote the script alongside Mattson Tomlin, and told Variety at last year’s Emmys that he is “so incredibly excited” and “really proud of the script” they produced together. Barry Keoghan is also anticipated to reprise his role as the Joker, though that has not yet been officially confirmed.
With a winter Gotham setting, a Dent family arc pointing squarely toward Two-Face, and a roster of returning faces that made the original so compelling, ‘The Batman: Part II’ is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly tracked productions in DC‘s near future. The only question that remains is just how many of Gotham’s secrets Matt Reeves is still keeping hidden, and whether the additional casting news promised for May 14 will finally pull the curtain back on the sequel’s central villain.
Which of the confirmed returning cast members are you most excited to see back in Gotham, and does Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent feel like the right choice to carry that iconic role?
