Florence Pugh Is Hauntingly Perfect as Cathy Ames in Netflix’s First ‘East of Eden’ Teaser

John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’ has long been regarded as one of the most ambitious works in American literary history, a sprawling examination of morality, family, and the enduring human capacity for evil. Netflix acquired the rights to Steinbeck’s 1952 novel and set about turning it into a prestige limited series, with Florence Pugh attached to lead the project as far back as 2022. The production has been one of the most quietly anticipated in the streaming space ever since.

Much of that anticipation has centered on writer and adapter Zoe Kazan, whose relationship with the source material carries an almost mythological weight. Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the celebrated 1955 film adaptation of the novel, making this new series a project with a deeply personal and generational dimension for its creator. That kind of inherited connection to a beloved classic is rare in Hollywood, and it lends the entire endeavor a sense of purpose that extends well beyond a standard prestige adaptation.

Now the wait for a first real look is over. Netflix has released the debut teaser for ‘East of Eden,’ giving audiences their first glimpse of the cast inhabiting Steinbeck’s world, accompanied by Pugh’s cool, unsettling voiceover. The series is billed as a fresh interpretation of Steinbeck’s masterpiece, exploring the timeless tension between good and evil through the multigenerational saga of the Trask family and its chilling antihero, Cathy Ames.

Pugh takes on the role of Cathy Ames, with Christopher Abbott playing her husband Adam Trask and Mike Faist playing Adam’s brother Charles Trask. The seven-episode limited series is written and executive produced by Kazan, and the ensemble also includes Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee, and Ciarán Hinds. It is one of the more formidable casts assembled for a streaming limited series in recent years, and the teaser does nothing to dampen that excitement.

Abbott, whose recent work in ‘Poor Things’ earned widespread praise, has spoken openly about what makes this version of the story feel distinct. In a recent interview with IndieWire, Abbott reflected on Pugh’s approach to the character, saying that even when a character might appear evil on the surface, she always works to find the heart and humanity within them, and that this version of Cathy gives her far more to work with than the 1955 film ever did.

When production kicked off in New Zealand in late 2024, Kazan shared that while the familial resonance of adapting a project her grandfather once helmed was not lost on her, it was ultimately Steinbeck’s writing itself, which she described as personal, shocking, profound, and free, that has kept her enthralled by ‘East of Eden’ since she first read the book as a young teenager.

Behind the camera, Garth Davis, best known for the Oscar-nominated film ‘Lion’, helmed Episodes 1 through 4, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the final three episodes. Filming took place across New Zealand, with locations including Auckland, Dunedin, and Oamaru, and production wrapped in March 2025. With post-production now underway, the series is targeting a Fall 2026 release on Netflix globally.

Whether Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames joins the ranks of television’s most unforgettable antiheroes is the question fans of the novel will be debating all the way until premiere night, and it would be worth hearing where you stand on that already.
