The search for cinema’s most iconic spy is officially underway, and the names emerging from the process are already generating serious conversation across the industry. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in mid-May that auditions to find Daniel Craig’s James Bond successor are underway, with the studio enlisting acclaimed casting director Nina Gold to lead the process. It marks the first time the franchise has entered this phase under full Amazon stewardship, and every name that surfaces is being scrutinized with the kind of intensity only a 007 search can produce.

Nina Gold brings a formidable track record to the role, best known for building the world of Westeros on ‘Game of Thrones’, casting ‘The Crown’ for Netflix, and working across five films in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, including selecting Daisy Ridley as Rey in ‘The Force Awakens’. She also received an Oscar nomination in 2025 for her work on ‘Hamnet’, during the first year the Academy introduced a category for casting. Putting someone with that depth of experience in charge of what may be Hollywood’s most consequential casting decision in years sends a clear signal about how seriously Amazon is approaching the task.

The first confirmed name to enter that conversation is Tom Francis. The 26-year-old British actor, whose reputation rests primarily on his stage work, has auditioned for the role, according to Variety. He is one of many performers jockeying for the part in a casting process that remains ongoing.

Francis built his name in Jamie Lloyd’s stripped-back revival of ‘Sunset Boulevard’, originating the role of Joe Gillis opposite Nicole Scherzinger at the Savoy Theatre before the production transferred to Broadway, where it earned seven Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical. He took home the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical and received a Tony nomination, a remarkable achievement for what was effectively his debut leading role. It is the kind of theatrical pedigree that commands respect, even if his screen resume remains relatively lean.

Jacob Elordi Is Reportedly in Pole Position to Become the Youngest James Bond in Franchise History

His film credits include a small role in ‘Jay Kelly’, the recent George Clooney ensemble drama, and he is set to appear in Peter Berg’s ‘The Mosquito Bowl’, a World War II sports drama also featuring Nicholas Galitzine and Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd. Notably, ‘Jay Kelly’ was produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who are now the producers in charge of the Bond franchise itself. That prior connection is the kind of detail that rarely escapes notice in Hollywood.

Other names circulating in casting speculation include Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner, though no official shortlist has been confirmed by the studio. Bond 26 will be directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script by Steven Knight, the creator of ‘Peaky Blinders’, with producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman overseeing the project. Speaking at CinemaCon last month, Amazon MGM’s head of film Courtenay Valenti told Variety that the studio is “taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,” adding that pairing the franchise with Villeneuve’s team is “setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy.”

Francis arriving in this conversation as a genuine contender rather than a rumor-mill name is a fascinating development, and it raises the obvious question of whether Bond 26 is ready to take a bold swing on a stage star with barely any screen time to his name. Whether you think that daring instinct makes him the perfect choice or a surprising gamble, share your take on Tom Francis as 007 in the comments.
