‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Season 2 Just Landed a Scorsese, and the Spy Roster Is Getting Very Interesting
Hollywood bloodlines are officially entering the world of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’ Francesca Scorsese, the 26-year-old actress and daughter of legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, has been cast in the upcoming second season of the Prime Video spy drama series. The news broke through Deadline and quickly swept through entertainment circles, adding one of the more intriguing young talents in the industry to an already buzzy production.
Francesca has become something of a cultural figure beyond her famous surname, known as the TikTok star who helped grow her father’s social media presence, but her acting credentials are steadily building a case of their own. She has appeared in the HBO and Sky Atlantic series ‘We Are Who We Are’ as well as films like ‘Roommates’ and ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,’ the latter of which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. A project with Prime Video at this scale marks a notable step up.
Scorsese will star as a Jane Smith in the new season, and is believed to be part of a separate Smith couple, distinct from the central pairing being led by Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder. The anthology-leaning structure of the show means multiple Smiths can coexist within the same season, a format established in the first run. Season one featured Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza González as an additional John and Jane alongside the leads, setting the precedent for this layered approach to espionage couples.
Season one stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are believed to be reprising their roles to some degree, though the full extent of their involvement remains unclear. Sophie Thatcher of ‘Yellowjackets’ was originally in talks for the season before dropping out, with scheduling conflicts tied to production delays ultimately pulling her away from the project. Anna Ouyang Moench serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the new season alongside Glover, while Erskine has additionally stepped into an executive producer role.
Glover is also set to direct multiple episodes of season two, building on his work helming the season one finale, marking an expanded creative footprint for the co-creator behind the show. The series earned 16 Emmy nominations for its first season and won two statuettes, putting significant expectations on whatever comes next. Production began in Los Angeles last month, meaning the machine is already well in motion.
Other rumored names swirling around the season include Lily-Rose Depp, Levon Hawke, Oscar nominee Wagner Moura, and Gael GarcÃa Bernal, suggesting the show may once again lean into a stacked ensemble of recognizable and rising faces. If the casting trajectory holds, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ season two is shaping up to be one of the more star-studded spy ensembles on streaming.
Whether Francesca Scorsese steps fully out of the shadow of her surname and into a breakout role on this stage is a conversation worth having, so drop your thoughts on her casting below.
